Essential Defense: The Defensive Handgun Reality Course (Prescott, AZ)

What is the Essential Defense: The Defensive Handgun Reality Course?
Most gun owners don’t train often — and most won’t practice enough to master complex skills that take years to learn. That’s reality.
Essential Defense is built around that truth. This isn’t another “tacticool” class with endless drills you’ll never sustain. Instead, it’s a two-day, reality-based course focused on the small set of proven defensive handgun skills that make the biggest difference in real-world encounters.
It’s more than just shooting — it’s about surviving the fight itself, making the right decisions under pressure, and handling the critical aftermath. You’ll discover how to use your handgun as a true force multiplier, giving you the tools to win the physical, legal, and emotional battles that come with a deadly encounter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this class designed for?
Essential Defense is for everyday gun owners who want to be prepared for the reality of using a handgun in self-defense.
It’s designed for:
- Concealed carriers who want confidence that they can actually handle a violent encounter.
- Gun owners who don’t train often but want to know the essentials that really matter.
- Home defenders who want practical skills to keep themselves and their families safe.
- Experienced shooters who already handle a gun well but want to test themselves in realistic, decision-based scenarios they can’t replicate at the range.
This course is not about mastering endless techniques or playing “tactical games.” It’s about giving you the critical skills and decision-making tools that give you the best chance of winning the fight, surviving the aftermath, and going home to your family.
What topics are covered?
In this two-day course, we focus on the essential, evidence-based skills that prepare you for real-world defensive encounters. You’ll train to:
- React fast at close range. Most civilian gunfights happen within a few yards, are over in seconds, and are decided by the first accurate hit.
- Make correct shoot/no-shoot decisions. Every drill includes decision-making, because pulling the trigger isn’t always the answer.
- Use your handgun as a force multiplier. Forget skills you’ll never practice enough to master — we focus on the firearm as your most effective defensive tool.
- Move and protect others under stress. Learn how to fight while keeping loved ones safe and using movement to your advantage.
- Handle the fight after the fight. From immediate medical actions and calling 911 to managing police interaction and surviving the legal/emotional aftermath.
Whether you’re new to concealed carry or already shoot well, each drill has layered challenge levels — so you’ll be pushed at your ability while gaining skills that matter most for real life.
What’s the difference between Essential Defense and our Force-on-Force class?
Both classes prepare you for real-world self-defense, but they do it in very different ways.
- Force-on-Force immerses you in realistic scenarios where you have to make fast decisions under pressure. There is a short live-fire block to review core skills, but most of the learning comes from scenario-based exercises and the after-action reviews that follow. The focus is on experience — seeing how you react, learning from mistakes, and understanding what works (and what doesn’t) in the chaos of a simulated encounter.
- Essential Defense is more structured and skill-focused. It’s a two-day course built on data from real defensive gun uses. We concentrate on the small set of handgun skills that matter most — fast and accurate first hits, shoot/no-shoot decisions, protecting others, movement, and handling the aftermath. Students train to specific performance standards, and while scenarios are included, the emphasis is on building and refining skills that every gun owner should have.
Think of it this way:
- Essential Defense = structured skill development based on real-world data.
- Force-on-Force = scenario immersion, decision-making, and lessons learned through experience.
Both complement each other, but they serve different purposes — one builds your foundation, the other tests it in unpredictable situations.
What are the class’s gear requirements?
- Pistol of your choice. Make sure it is in good, working condition.
- A concealed carry holster (either an Outside-the-Waistband or Inside-the-Waistband holster) and gun belt.
- At least 3 magazines. (If you are shooting a 1911 platform bring extra magazines so you can shoot 30 rounds per relay.)
- Magazine pouches so you can carry at least 2 extra magazines
- Roughly 750 rounds of your caliber ammunition
- Eye and ear protection
- Comfortable shoes. Most of the day, we will be on our feet.
- Sunscreen, portable chair, and a hat (Optional, but we will spend all day in the sun.)
- Drinks, snacks, and food.
- In the afternoon of Day 2, we will run realistic training scenarios using non-lethal rounds, i.e. Force-on-Force. Students are encouraged, but NOT REQUIRED, to participate. If you would like to participate, please bring the following:
- Long-sleeved shirt, and pants are mandatory as a minimum for Force-on-Force scenarios. (Clothing will very possibly be stained by paint, so please wear expendable items.)
- Cover garment (thick, oversized sweater or jacket to help absorb the impact of non-lethal ammunition–only worn for scenario training). It’s a good idea to bring layers as you determine your own comfort level and can adjust accordingly.
- Scarf or balaclava to protect your skin/neck area.
- Groin protection. Mandatory for use during scenario training.
- Tactical/padded gloves that allow you to manipulate your weapon while providing a level of protection against non-lethal ammunition. Mandatory for use during scenario training. A lot of people get shot in their hands, so good, padded gloves are important.
- Additional safety equipment for Force on Force will be provided.
Can anyone attend the class?
This is NOT a beginner's class.
All students must know how to operate their firearm safely and handle it effectively, and be comfortable and safe when drawing from a holster. If you’re still fumbling with your gun, unsure about your draw stroke, or have never trained drawing from concealment, this class is not the right starting point.
👉 If that describes you, we highly recommend taking our Concealed Carry Foundations class first. It will give you the confidence, safety, and baseline skills you need before stepping into Essential Defense.
Our goal is to keep Essential Defense focused on what matters most — surviving and winning real defensive encounters — and that requires students who already have solid, safe gun-handling fundamentals.
Students must be at least 21 years old, or 18+ with a guardian, and due to the Department of State ITAR regulations, tactical training is only available to US Citizens/Legal Residents.
